There is no another place like Khao Sok National Park in Southern Thailand. It is one of the most protected, unspoiled area in the world.
It is around 740 km2 covered by the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world and is actually older than Amazon jungle! Its scenery reminds the one from the Avatar movie! Huge limestone mountains shooting straight up in the air contrast with deep valleys and breath-taking lake… Khao Sok is also a home of the most unusual plants and animal you can see on our planet!
The chill out factor
Khao Sok is not yet that touristic, maybe because it is not that easy to get there, therefore if you are looking for a place where you can chill out and relax, Khao Sok is a must spot to visit. You can really escape from the loud cities and those internet overwhelm places and just contemplate or to try an elephant trekking and canoeing.
Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake
It is also definitely worth to take a tour to the Cheow Lan Lake, where you can take a canoe trip to rafthouses. They are pretty rough, so it is not great place to stay overnight for everyone, but definitely a nice lunch on the lake in the middle of nowhere is also a pretty good option. After a lunch we went for one hour trekking through the jungle to explore the Khao Sok Cave. And now, it is not a chill-out!:) We had a guide, but even though it was quite dangerous (after the trip I found out that seven people were killed in this cave in 2007!).
How to get there
Overall, I would recommend to stay in one of the resorts in the jungle, like Las Orquideas, but I will write about it in my next post.
Khao Sok is perfectly situated on the mainland between Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak and Koh Samui, the most popular destinations in southern Thailand. You will need to get a bus from Surat Thani to get there. THe ride takes approx. 2 hours.
