Giethoorn: Idyllic Village in The Netherlands

The village of Giethoorn is a picturesque paradise, located to the east of the Noordoostpolder.

The surrounding

An awe inspiring network of canals wind their way through the village that hardly has any drivable streets, which is one of the reasons it’s so charming. You’ll be able to take a leisurely boat ride along the canals, which gave Geithoom the nickname of the Venice of the North. As you peacefully glide along, you’ll take in all the beautiful sights of the quaint straw roofed homes and beautiful gardens, just part of what makes it one of Netherlands best chill out spots.

Whether you want to go off the beaten path on a self guided tour, to some special hidden places, or visit all the popular sights, anything you do will be extremely rewarding. You can wander through the area and find a nice place to relax and watch the cows and ducks wandering about, enjoying the life that surrounds you both. After a little rest and relaxation, you can go for the bike ride and really see Giethoom in all its glory. While biking around Giethoorn you’ll see several lovely ponds blanketed with exquisite water lilies. In addition, there are some fun chill out spots nearby where you can stop in and enjoy an ice cold beer and visit with fellow travellers or the locals.

Wisper boats

Since all the traffic in the area has to move by way of water, they use what they call Whisper boats because they are quiet and won’t interrupt the peace surrounding this scenic little village that creates the sensation of stepping back in time. You’ll find the perfect place to relax tucked in here and there, and no matter where you look, you’ll find the perfect picture which will bring out the photographer in you.

The village itself

The biggest draw of Giethoorn is the picturesque village itself, with its peaceful and relaxing ambiance which can keep you entertained for hours. You can spend the day taking the village boat tour and enjoy the classic Dutch architecture and lovingly maintained eighteenth and nineteenth century farm houses. This is the ideal place to chill out and breath in the fresh, crisp air, watching fluffy clouds float by as you feel the stresses of life simply roll away.

Shopping in Giethoom is a lot of fun. Basically, you boat and shop – how cool is that? You’ll find all kinds of unique little shops selling everything from things made from shells, ceramics and nice jewelry and trinkets. During the summer there’s ice cream for all to enjoy while soaking in the sights all around you. You won’t find a lot of cafes but they do have a nice grocery store that carries everything you’ll need during your stay. You will find a variety of nice restaurants nearby where you can dine on roasted lamb or a yummy custard soup.

How to get there?

Giethoom is one of the most exquisite villages you’ll ever see. If you appreciate long, tranquil boat rides, the ideal place to relax in the middle of vast amounts of charm and beauty, Giethoom is one of Netherlands chill out spots that you really must do yourself a favor and experience. It takes about 2.5 hours to get to Giethoom from Zwolle via public transportation.
