How to get there…
Folegandros is located within the Aegean Sea and helps forms the Cyclades and is one of Europe’s undiscovered places. As its just a 45 minutes feery ride from Santorini, you could think that it would be a pretty similar island. How very wrong!
The island is very small and is home of just three small villages that hold under 700 people on the island. That is just one of the reasons that it is a great place to get away and one of the best chill out spots.Folegandros is nothing like it!
The terrain of the island helps with the secluded nature of your escape. On Folegandros you will find numerous cliffs and caves that you can explorer. From the port of Folegandros you can help experience the rest of the Aegean Sea. You will also be able to head off to the beach Katergo. The only way to get to Katergo is by boat making it one of the most secluded beaches you will ever find.
When you are looking to explore the island you should venture off on foot. The island has few paved roads and the true adventures are found on foot. While exploring the terrain you will find that there are paths that are still paved by ancient marble blocks. You will also seem ancient stone walls throughout the hill sides as you explorer.
The capital of the island is Hora which is pressed against a cliff that towers 820 feet above sea level. You will find that the village has been built from the ancient medieval castle of kastro. The rest of the town shows houses with large staircases on the approach with large balconies overlooking the village.For those that have watched Mamma Mia! the island might seem familiar, although the movie was not recorded in this location, its beauty reminds those sceneries from the film. As you speak to the few that have spent time in this beautiful island, you will realize why many find this one of the best places to just find chill out spots and get away from the world.
It’s not only about the surroundings
And the most important- the food! Dinning out seems to be a favourite activity of locals! Even though the island is pretty small, there are many amazing restaurants with outside tables based within narrow, cobbled streets! You can eat and drink like a king for as little as 25 euros for two!
The secluded beaches and magnificent views allows one to get lost in the middle of the Aegean Sea and to vividly imagine never leaving again. When you are planning your trip you should look to leave two days for exploring the small island. This way you will be able to adventure the terrain as many ancient civilizations have done before you. When you are done it will be time to enjoy your place to relax and enjoy the calmness around you.
